city of Genoa which has the biggest port
in the country, progressively transformed its image from an industrial city into a
touristic and artistic one. A rebirth process was initiated to increase the economic
potential of the city, through creation of a high-tech district and following its cultural
traditions and heritage. Tourism has increased due to a growing attractiveness and
the city obtained the European Capital of Culture title in 2004.
Genoa is home to a number of cultural heritage monuments such as the noble Rolli
Palaces —42 of which are registered at the UNESCOWorld Heritage—, the Palazzo
Ducale —the cultural palace of the city, with the most important exhibition as well
as conferences and events—, and the old medieval town —one of the most
important ones in Europe. The Old Harbour, restored in 1992, represents the
modern waterfront of the city and has begun to host several cultural, touristic, musical
and sport events.
The city has 35 museums and a rich and varied cultural offer. With more than 30
festivals and shows ranging from cinema to poetry, from theatre to music and ethnic
culture, Genoa presents itself as a city of live performances.The city also features 39
theatre rooms with diverse cultural programmes and numerous art galleries. In
addition, Genoa hosts the
Festival della Scienza
one of the biggest international events
to spread scientific culture.
Genoa has a specific exhibition space —Sala Dogana in Palazzo Ducale— dedicated
to the promotion of young Italian artists. Genoa set up a specific web portal
dedicated to creativity within the “Creative Cities” project (
that gives visibility and connects the city’s cultural practitioners and companies as
well as showcases information about initiatives, events, opportunities and resources
for the development of culture and the creative industries.
