La Maddalena.
The benefit of such initiative was therefore twofold: to give visibility
to young Genoese artists and to enhance historic shops of the area.
Target beneficiaries:
Artists, local residents, tourists, creative enterprises/
entrepreneurs.
Stakeholders:
Local public administration (Municipality of Genoa - Culture and
Tourism Department, Cultural Office), cultural and civic associations, private sponsors
(bank support) and EU.
Budget:
The budget dedicated to the “Adopt an artist” was €1,100 (staff costs not
included), fully financed by the national administration. The development plan for the
whole area being a 20-year process, it is not possible to quantify the overall total
investment.
Results:
Concerning Adopt an artist project, the most visible results were an
increase of visitors in the area during the exhibition: although it was not possible to
count the real number of visitors for each shop, the
Loggia di Banchi
, where the
preparatory artworks were displayed, received more than 4.400 people.
As for the area as a whole, it has seen the establishment of the Altrove Theater as
well as other cultural institutions, new shops and touristic facilities. The CRESTA
Festival (Festival of creativity) was also organised there. All activities related to the
aforementioned entities or within CRESTA resulted in an increased number of
citizens and tourists participating in these events and visiting
La Maddalena
.
The Municipality of Genoa is aware that more targeted policies are needed in the
area and that organising such events on a regular basis can help stimulating its
revitalisation. Integrating cultural and artistic interventions with actions in the field of
urban security may foster a sense of belonging whilst promoting the participation of
young people in the life of the city and its historic centre.
Success/ failure factors:
Success factors: supporting and strengthening organisations
and networks already working on the territory; Involving various stakeholders (e.g.
social and economic actors), and building upon the specificities of the area; Promoting
theoretical reflections and innovative projects on the relationship art/ public context.
Obstacles: activating and managing new relationships and entering into a process
already in action and consolidated.
